While lawmakers in Washington. D.C., and state capitals debate the merits and costs of health reform, women around the nation are struggling to get affordable health care. For many women and our families, health reform cannot come too soon.
On April 1 & 2, 2009, we launched a series of Women's Speak-Outs for Action on Health Reform around the nation. The first Speak-Out was held in New York City, where women from across the area spoke out publicly about the problems they and their families experience with the current health care system, such as:
- Co-pays and deductibles that are so costly that women can't afford to use insurance, if they have any;
- Limits on coverage for pre-existing conditions;
- Plans that drop coverage after recipients get sick;
- Lack of translators for families that do not speak English.
